Responsibilities
We are representing a confidential quantum technology organization seeking a Senior Embedded (ARM) Engineer to own the real-time firmware that powers their cutting-edge quantum computing system. You will work on next-generation control electronics integrated into a single, highly sophisticated chip. Sitting at the heart of the machine between pulse-generating hardware and higher-level experimental software, you'll ensure precise signal delivery with nanosecond timing accuracy.
Your responsibilities include:
- Owning embedded firmware on ARM-based control platforms, from architecture through implementation to on-hardware debugging
- Developing and maintaining real-time software layers that coordinate pulse sequencing, timing, and data flow across highly integrated control systems
- Writing and maintaining low-level drivers and board support packages
- Guaranteeing deterministic, low-latency behavior under hard real-time constraints
- Leading firmware bring-up alongside electronics and physics teams, debugging at the software-signal boundary
- Defining firmware architecture and engineering practices, including build, test, and release processes
- Contributing to interfaces between embedded layers and the broader software stack to ensure experiments execute correctly
What We're Looking For
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional embedded software development for real-time or timing-critical systems
- Deep expertise in C (and ideally C++) on ARM platforms, working close to hardware
- Experience with bare-metal and/or RTOS environments, understanding when each is appropriate
- Comfortable reading schematics and datasheets, debugging real hardware with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG
- Strong grasp of real-time concepts: interrupts, DMA, timing, concurrency, and determinism
- Proven track record of bringing up firmware on new hardware, not only maintaining existing systems
- Ability to collaborate effectively with experimental physicists and engineers, translating imprecise physical requirements into robust firmware
- Strong adaptability and quick learning mindset
- Good proficiency in English (written and spoken)
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience with highly integrated SoCs, particularly ARM+FPGA platforms such as Xilinx Zynq / RFSoC
- Working alongside FPGA/digital-electronics engineers at the software–gateware boundary
- Rust for embedded systems
- Embedded Linux on ARM (Cortex-A), including driver and kernel-module work
- Signal processing or control-loop implementation on embedded targets
- Experience with high-speed data acquisition or precision timing systems
- Familiarity with laboratory, scientific, or measurement instrumentation
- Prior experience with quantum computing or other deep-tech domains
