About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential defense technology client in Berlin seeking a Senior Mesh Network and MAC Engineer. This is a rare opportunity to work on autonomous platforms designed for contested tactical environments, where your networking protocols will enable critical communication between mobile systems operating under challenging RF conditions.

We are looking for an engineer who has shipped mesh networking solutions in production—not just simulation work—and who understands the Linux networking stack at the kernel level. You will architect MAC protocols and routing algorithms for directional wireless systems, solving neighbor discovery challenges under narrow beamforming constraints.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement MAC protocols and routing algorithms optimized for directional multi-node autonomous systems, addressing neighbor discovery under highly focused antenna beams
• Build dynamic TDMA scheduling and beam coordination mechanisms integrated with PHY and antenna steering systems, ensuring routing decisions reflect real-time RF characteristics
• Deliver resilient multi-hop relay capabilities sustaining high-bandwidth video and control links between mobile platforms over tactical distances
• Develop and maintain multi-node Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testbeds with automated logging pipelines to quantitatively verify network join times and topology reformation behavior
• Debug and optimize networking performance on embedded Linux systems in live operational scenarios

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Proven track record designing and shipping mesh networking protocols in commercial or defense products—simulation-only experience does not qualify
• Deep practical expertise with the Linux networking stack at kernel and packet levels, with strong live-debugging skills on embedded systems
• Solid understanding of wireless propagation and physical layer constraints, with hands-on experience designing medium-access control schemes or TDMA schedulers
• Radio-literate with demonstrated ability to design MAC schemes grounded in RF realities

Highly Valued:

• Active contributions to open-source routing protocols such as batman-adv, olsrd, or Babel
• Professional background with tactical mesh networking vendors in the defense or communications sector
• Experience with mmWave backhaul systems or other directional beamforming technologies
• Engineers who naturally think in terms of beams and directional constraints rather than omnidirectional assumptions
