About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Head of Engineering, Sales & Marketing Tools to join their London-based leadership team on a remote basis.

This role oversees the engineering organization responsible for workforce operations platforms serving tens of thousands of field sales agents, commission and compensation systems that move significant money daily, partner management tools, customer rewards platforms serving millions of users, and marketing technology infrastructure. You'll be modernizing and re-architecting legacy systems that have scaled rapidly, ensuring financial correctness and reliability for platforms that underpin the commercial engine of a high-growth organization.

This is a platform engineering and legacy modernization challenge at 20+ million user scale, not a traditional CRM leadership role. Prior SalesTech or CRM domain experience is explicitly not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the modernization and re-architecture of legacy distributed systems serving a large field sales network and millions of end users
  • Ensure financial correctness and reliability of commission calculation, attribution, wallet management, and payout systems
  • Oversee engineering for partner management, customer rewards platforms, and marketing technology stack customization
  • Manage and develop an engineering organization of 20+ team members, including multiple engineering managers
  • Drive platform reliability improvements and performance optimization across high-throughput, data-intensive systems
  • Collaborate with product and business stakeholders to balance commercial urgency with engineering quality and scalability
  • Build engineering mechanisms that reduce cognitive load and raise quality standards across the organization
  • Lead technical strategy for systems where financial correctness is a core requirement, not just availability

What We're Looking For

  • 10–15 years of overall software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading engineering teams through growth phases
  • 5+ years of hands-on, production-level experience writing and shipping Java code as a practicing engineer—this means years spent writing Java yourself, not overseeing teams
  • At least 5 years managing managers—leading an engineering organization through other engineering leaders, not running a single team
  • Proven platform engineering experience at scale: building and running complex distributed systems, not just feature delivery
  • Experience navigating legacy migrations and re-architecture projects at 20M+ user scale
  • Strong backend engineering skills in high-throughput, data-intensive distributed systems; proficiency in Java and Spring Boot
  • Experience managing and developing large engineering teams of 20 or more members
  • Experience building systems where financial correctness matters—commissions, payouts, wallets, ledgers, or equivalent—is a strong advantage
  • Fintech or payments background strongly preferred
  • Exposure to customer engagement or marketing automation platforms is a plus but not required

Leadership Attributes: We assess candidates on customer obsession, engineering craft, systemization, urgency, ownership, humility, candor, and integrity. Evidence of these qualities throughout your career is essential.
