Backend Engineer – Senior

About This Role

We are representing a confidential SaaS client building AI-powered infrastructure for frontline operations. They partner with multi-location operators across hospitality and similar industries, and their backend has grown rapidly: Node.js and Postgres API, background workers, queues, and AI pipelines powering the product.

We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own and scale this infrastructure layer. You'll work in Berlin - Mitte with a small, high-trust engineering team.

Responsibilities

• Own backend architecture: API design, data modelling, query performance, and decisions that impact long-term scalability
• Build and maintain asynchronous systems: queues, background jobs, scheduled work, retry logic, and failure handling
• Own AI pipelines: versioned prompts, evaluation frameworks, cost and latency budgets, and resilient behaviour when model providers experience issues
• Build data pipelines for reporting and analytics that provide trustworthy cross-location insights
• Develop integrations with third-party systems (POS, scheduling, payroll) using shared, scalable patterns rather than one-off connectors
• Implement idempotency, reconciliation, per-customer alerting, and drift detection for partner API integrations
• Manage technical relationships with integration partners: sandbox access, certification processes, API reviews
• Build internal tooling that enables customer success teams to diagnose sync failures and manage integrations

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience building and operating production backend systems, with accountability for long-term technical decisions
• Deep understanding of distributed systems: partial failure, eventual consistency, retries, idempotency, and reconciliation patterns
• Experience integrating with external APIs beyond your control, with specific examples of handling failures and edge cases
• Patience and professionalism working with external vendors and partners on their timelines
• Comfort working with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor) while maintaining high standards for code quality, coherence, and maintainability
• Pragmatic judgment about which abstractions to build now versus later
• Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, Postgres, Prisma, or Kubernetes is a strong plus

Bonus qualifications:

• Production experience running LLM features, including evaluation and cost control
• Built observability for partially controlled systems
• Completed partner certification or app review processes
• Background in hospitality, retail, or workforce tooling
