Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential energy-tech organization in München that is building critical infrastructure for their platform. In this role, you will build and run the platform that supports the entire product: event streams, backend services, and cloud infrastructure. Industrial meter readings arrive from sites across Europe through messages and API integrations. Your responsibility is ensuring this traffic lands reliably, moves through the system in a shape other teams can build on, and scales as the number of sites grows.

You will join a team of 12 engineers organized into two squads, with real ownership and rapid deployment cycles measured in weeks rather than quarters. Your work will span several key areas:

  • Event streaming: Own topic and schema design, partitioning, retention and delivery semantics. Handle the everyday reality of consumers falling behind, replays, backfills, and late or duplicated readings using Kafka as the system's spine.
  • Backend services in TypeScript: Build and maintain ingestion services, integrations and APIs around the event stream. Turn the variety of different site configurations into one consistent interface that product squads can rely on.
  • Cloud infrastructure on GCP: Manage compute, networking, IAM, infrastructure as code, CI/CD and observability. Create a paved road so other engineers can ship and debug their own services independently.
  • Technical direction: Set the direction for where the platform invests, what gets standardized, what remains flexible, and bring the rest of the team along with those decisions.

What We're Looking For

Must have:

  • At least 6–8 years building and running backend systems in production, including significant time in a platform or infrastructure role that other engineers depended on
  • Strong backend engineering in TypeScript. You must have designed, shipped and operated services and APIs in production TypeScript—not just touched it around the edges
  • Hands-on production experience with Kafka: topic design, consumer groups, ordering and delivery guarantees, and practical troubleshooting when consumer groups fall behind. Comparable streaming platforms acceptable if you know them at this depth
  • Solid experience with GCP or equivalent cloud platforms: containers, networking and IAM basics, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, monitoring and alerting. You must have owned infrastructure, not just deployed to it
  • Comfortable with high-volume time-series data: ingestion, data quality, backfills, and handling late, missing and duplicated readings
  • Production experience sufficient to know which trade-offs come back to bite, when the boring option is right, and how to make calls with incomplete information
  • Kubernetes knowledge at the level of running it, not only deploying to it
  • Clear written and spoken English; German is a plus

Nice to have:

  • Experience in energy, industrial, IoT or domains where data comes from physical hardware
  • Background with metering or device protocols, telemetry at scale, or streaming pipelines
  • Knowledge of a second programming language such as Python, Go or Kotlin
  • Experience running what you build: monitoring, alerting, and debugging production issues
