Software Development Engineer (US Federal)

Workday seeks a Software Development Engineer specializing in US Federal systems to join our engineering team in Reston, Virginia. This is a full-time, on-site position supporting mission-critical applications for government clients.

Position Summary

As a Software Development Engineer focused on US Federal compliance and systems, you'll design, build, and maintain enterprise software solutions that serve government organizations and federal agencies. You'll work on applications that demand security certifications, audit compliance, and integration with legacy federal infrastructure. This role combines core software engineering with specialized knowledge of federal technology requirements and regulations.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Write and review production code across Workday's cloud platform, ensuring performance and security standards
• Collaborate with product and infrastructure teams to architect solutions that meet federal compliance requirements
• Design APIs and integrations that connect federal systems safely and securely
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and continuous deployment processes
• Debug complex issues in production and non-production environments
• Document technical decisions and contribute to team knowledge sharing
• Ensure software meets federal security standards, audit requirements, and data protection regulations

Who We're Looking For

• Strong foundation in at least one programming language (Java, Python, C++, Go, or similar)
• Experience with cloud platforms, distributed systems, or enterprise software architecture
• Familiarity with federal compliance frameworks, FedRAMP, or government IT environments (strongly preferred)
• Understanding of API design, database systems, and secure coding practices
• Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; equivalent professional experience considered
• Active or ability to obtain a government security clearance (if required for the role)
