Position Summary
As a Software Engineer II - Student Affairs at WGU, you'll be an integral part of the engineering team responsible for building and enhancing the technology platforms that serve thousands of students. This is a hands-on technical position where you'll work on systems that impact student enrollment, communication, progress tracking, and academic planning. You'll contribute to a culture of quality, continuous improvement, and student-centered design.
Your Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain software applications and services that support student-facing operations and workflows
- Write clean, well-tested code following established engineering standards and best practices
- Collaborate with product managers, student services teams, and fellow engineers to understand requirements and deliver solutions
- Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and mentor junior team members
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve defects in existing systems and applications
- Contribute to system design discussions and architectural decisions that impact student experience
- Participate in on-call support rotation for critical systems as needed
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages commonly used in modern software development
- Solid understanding of relational databases, APIs, and web services architecture
- Experience building or maintaining production systems with attention to reliability and performance
- Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent professional experience
- Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to work independently and collaboratively
