Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Search & Recommendations

We are representing a confidential streaming technology company seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join their Search & Recommendations team in Cambridge. Our client is a leader in the streaming platform space, serving tens of millions of active users across multiple markets.

This role offers the opportunity to work on large-scale machine learning systems that directly impact how millions of users discover and engage with content. You'll be applying cutting-edge ML techniques to solve real-world search and discovery challenges in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Apply state-of-the-art machine learning techniques including deep learning, transformers, LLMs, bandits, causal inference, and optimizations to enhance user search and discovery experiences
• Design, run, and analyze online A/B tests against critical business KPIs to measure model performance and user engagement
• Collaborate with engineering teams across time zones and work with cross-functional partners to translate business requirements into technical specifications
• Build and maintain ML infrastructure that scales with user growth, supports developer velocity, and adapts to evolving business needs
• Provide technical leadership to drive the ML roadmap for search ranking and monetization initiatives
• Participate in recruiting, interviewing, training, and mentoring engineers to build a high-performing team

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of experience applying machine learning to large-scale problems in recommendation systems, search, or advertising (or PhD with 6+ years of experience)
• Strong computer science fundamentals with the ability to convert ideas to production-quality code efficiently
• Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals including classification, deep neural networks, and sequence-based models; familiarity with modern NLP and multi-modal representation learning is a plus
• Hands-on experience with big data systems such as Spark, S3, and Airflow, and proficiency in Java, Scala, or Python
• Solid grasp of system architecture, big data technologies, streaming architectures, and data pipeline design
• Demonstrated fluency with AI and agentic engineering tools (coding assistants, agent frameworks, custom integrations) and the ability to describe real projects where you've shipped work using these tools
• MS in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field required; PhD preferred
• Experience driving an agent-assisted workflow, verifying AI-generated output, and ramping quickly on unfamiliar codebases with AI assistance

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive with senior ML engineering roles in the Cambridge market.
