Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure & Acquisition – Melbourne, Australia

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology organization seeking a Software Engineer specializing in Data Infrastructure & Acquisition. This role sits at the intersection of large-scale data engineering and machine learning infrastructure, working on petabyte-scale datasets that power next-generation speech technology products.

Our client operates in a fully distributed environment with team members globally. You'll collaborate with research scientists, engineers from leading tech companies, and PhD-level talent to build and operate mission-critical data acquisition pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Identify and integrate new sources of audio data into large-scale ingestion pipelines
• Operate and extend cloud infrastructure for data ingestion, currently running on GCP and managed with Terraform
• Optimize cost, throughput, and quality trade-offs to deliver richer datasets at greater scale and lower cost
• Collaborate with research scientists to define dataset requirements for next-generation machine learning models
• Contribute to the strategic roadmap for dataset acquisition and processing infrastructure
• Build and maintain data processing workflows that handle petabyte-scale operations

What We're Looking For

• BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field
• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• Strong proficiency with bash and Python scripting in Linux environments
• Professional experience with Docker and Infrastructure-as-Code concepts
• Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (GCP experience is a plus)
• Experience with web crawlers and large-scale data processing workflows is highly valued
• Proven ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to shifting priorities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for asynchronous collaboration
• Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort operating in a fast-paced, distributed environment
