Senior Engineering Manager (m/f/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology organization in their search for a Senior Engineering Manager based in Berlin. Our client is building distributed identity and data management platforms at scale, and they need an experienced engineering leader who can balance deep technical expertise with people leadership.

This is a senior management role overseeing multiple engineering teams working across the full stack. While you'll lead teams building frontend, backend, and platform infrastructure, your technical depth in backend systems—particularly TypeScript, microservices, and cloud architecture—will be essential to guide architecture decisions, maintain quality standards, and drive technical strategy.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow multiple engineering teams, providing vision, direction, and coaching to engineering managers, staff engineers, and senior individual contributors
• Drive engineering execution and on-time delivery of secure, performant, and customer-centric distributed systems
• Oversee and contribute to the design and development of high-scale, high-performance production systems in cloud environments
• Collaborate with product, design, and business stakeholders to define and execute the technology roadmap
• Establish and evolve engineering best practices, delivery processes, and quality standards to scale the organization effectively
• Mentor and develop engineering leaders, fostering career growth, leadership depth, and technical excellence across teams
• Stay ahead of emerging technologies and bring innovative approaches to improve scalability, architecture, and developer experience
• Champion privacy by design, security-first principles, and high-quality engineering across backend and frontend systems

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications:

• Proven track record leading engineering organizations in global, high-growth environments while driving on-time delivery of high-quality systems at scale
• Strong leadership skills: coaching, mentoring, developing leaders, and fostering high-performing, inclusive teams
• Ability to balance strategic vision with practical execution, aligning engineering teams with business outcomes
• Deep expertise in TypeScript/Node.js backend development
• Experience with React/Next.js and/or Flutter, demonstrating solid understanding of modern web and/or mobile development practices
• Proven success designing, deploying, and scaling microservices in AWS cloud environments
• Strong advocate for privacy, security, cryptography, and resilient system design
• Skilled at balancing technical leadership and people leadership, growing teams while staying engaged in critical technical decisions
• Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills with product, design, and security stakeholders
• Thrive in fast-moving startup environments, building autonomous teams that experiment, learn, and deliver at speed

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience with Dart programming language
• Backend expertise in Rust
• Experience working across functions, locations, and time zones
• Expertise in decentralized identity solutions or authentication domains
• Experience with asynchronous cryptography and building systems with advanced cryptography requirements

Location: Berlin, Germany (hybrid working model with flexible hours)
