Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Data Streaming

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential enterprise software organization in their search for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Data Streaming to join a newly formed greenfield team. This is a remote position offering the chance to architect foundational streaming infrastructure from the ground up.

You'll be building a durable, continuously-written streaming layer that fundamentally changes how process data flows out of complex orchestration systems. This isn't iterating on existing architecture—you'll be solving genuine greenfield challenges: designing how customers reliably stream their operational data into their own ecosystems, rebuilding analytics consumption patterns at scale, and making core architectural decisions that will shape the platform's data layer for years to come.

As part of a small, high-ownership team, you'll work across the full stack of concerns: the streaming infrastructure itself, customer-facing integration capabilities, and internal data consumers built on top of your work. You'll partner closely with product management, distributed systems engineers, QA, and support to deliver real customer value while shaping both technical direction and team scope.

Responsibilities

• Design and build core streaming infrastructure that decouples data access from live execution engines, backed by durable, cost-effective storage
• Develop customer-facing data streaming capabilities, including integration pathways to systems like Kafka for reliable data export
• Rebuild analytics data consumption patterns at scale, moving workloads off critical execution paths entirely
• Make foundational architecture decisions around consistency guarantees and durability across distributed streaming pipelines
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating production data layer issues and feeding insights back into product development
• Coordinate medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end, from solution design through predictable delivery
• Collaborate across teams in a remote-first environment, translating requirements into actionable technical work

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 7+ years of backend engineering experience in Java, with strong focus on distributed or data-intensive systems
• Hands-on experience with object storage systems (S3/GCS/Azure or similar) and building reliable, idempotent upload/commit protocols
• Experience with Kafka or similar streaming/event-log systems
• Solid grounding in distributed systems fundamentals
• Demonstrated track record driving technical initiatives through genuine ambiguity in still-being-designed systems
• Proven experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives end-to-end, including solution design, project planning, cross-team coordination, and delivery
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in remote-first environments
• Ability and willingness to use the product you're building

Nice to Have:

• Experience with Apache Iceberg, Parquet, or lakehouse/data-lake architectures
• Experience with embedded state stores (RocksDB or similar) for projection/checkpointing workloads
• Experience with stream processing frameworks (Apache Flink), particularly stateful processing with local state backends
• Familiarity with object-storage-native streaming architectures
