Director Engineering, Retail Media& Marketplace

About the Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce organization in Germany seeking a Director of Engineering to lead a strategic engineering organization of approximately 40 engineers across 5–7 teams. This high-visibility leadership role focuses on two fast-growing commercial domains where your decisions will directly influence customer experience and revenue growth.

Reporting to executive engineering leadership, you will lead through Engineering Managers and partner closely with Product and Commercial stakeholders to turn engineering strategy into measurable business outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Set engineering direction across commercial B2B platforms, determining optimal convergence points to maximize value for external partners and the organization
• Develop Engineering Managers and their teams, evolving organizational structure as domains grow while maintaining clear ownership and autonomy
• Own delivery, reliability, architecture and technical debt management, continuously raising engineering maturity to enable velocity without sacrificing quality
• Co-own roadmaps with Product and Commercial teams, connecting engineering priorities to commercial outcomes including revenue metrics, partner economics and contribution margin
• Lead engineering relationships with external platforms, integrators and agencies, including build/buy/partner decisions, integrations, SLAs and vendor performance oversight

What We're Looking For

• 3+ years of experience leading multiple engineering teams through managers or leads
• Proven track record leading organizations through significant change such as merging domains, introducing new scope or platform replacements
• Experience leading development of commercial B2B platforms (marketplace, retail media, ad tech, payments or partner platforms)
• Background with high-traffic and transactional systems
• Strong technical judgment combined with commercial thinking, connecting engineering decisions to business outcomes
• Ability to partner confidently with senior Product and Commercial stakeholders
• Demonstrated measurable improvements in engineering excellence
• Comfortable navigating ambiguity, external partnerships and competing priorities
• Strong English communication skills essential
• Based in or willing to relocate to Germany
