Machine Learning Lead

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential social technology client seeking a Machine Learning Lead to own the ML strategy for conversational AI systems. This is a fully remote position open to candidates in Serbia or Spain.

Our client operates at the intersection of social connectivity and AI-driven dialogue systems. You'll lead the technical direction for LLM-powered products that directly impact user engagement and business metrics.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the ML roadmap for dialogue systems, prioritizing initiatives based on business impact (ARPU, retention, conversation quality)
• Lead and grow a team of 3 ML engineers—set technical standards, distribute work, make hiring and performance decisions
• Drive end-to-end LLM post-training and adaptation: supervised fine-tuning, LoRA/QLoRA, preference optimization techniques (DPO, ORPO, SimPO, GRPO), and dataset construction
• Design agent architectures and tool-using LLM systems including tool calling, structured outputs, routing, memory management, and guardrails
• Build comprehensive evaluation frameworks: offline and pairwise evaluations, LLM-as-a-judge systems, regression suites correlated with A/B test outcomes
• Reduce dialogue failure modes such as loops, contradictions, persona drift, context loss, and generic responses while optimizing inference latency and cost
• Remain hands-on (10–20% of time) for prototyping, debugging agent traces, and technical review

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Technical degree with proven ML engineering background—you have personally trained and shipped models in production
• Experience leading a team of 3–5 ML engineers, including hiring and performance management
• Expert-level Python skills and deep understanding of transformer architecture and modern LLM behavior
• Hands-on experience with training, fine-tuning, and evaluation of language models
• Production LLM systems experience: APIs, streaming, batching, fallbacks, cost/latency optimization, observability for traces and transcripts
• Ability to translate recent research into prototypes, evaluations, and shipped features with measurable impact
• Fluent Russian language skills
• Availability to work in CET (±2 hours) time zone

Nice to Have:

• Experience with multimodal systems (computer vision, image generation)
• Long-running conversation management and character consistency
• Familiarity with vLLM, TGI, SGLang
• Experience with DeepSpeed, FSDP, Accelerate
• Knowledge of quantization techniques and safety classifiers
