Language Lead – English (Contract)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology organization in their search for a contract Language Lead specializing in English. Our client is building advanced voice AI systems and needs a linguistics expert to own all language-quality decisions for English from end to end.

This is a substantial contractor role, not a standard annotation position. You will serve as the primary linguistic resource, managing annotation quality, auditing datasets, monitoring product performance, investigating issues, and executing projects requiring deep expertise. You'll work independently across multiple workstreams while collaborating with a distributed team.

This is an ongoing engagement with approximately 40 hours per week. Some availability during US Pacific business hours is preferred for team coordination and real-time support.

Responsibilities

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Answering questions from annotators about guidelines, edge cases, and language-specific issues through project communication channels
• Cascading new feedback, instructions, and rubric updates to annotation teams
• Auditing annotator-rated audio files to verify ratings and written feedback align with rubrics
• Preparing written quality assessments for annotators with specific examples and actionable recommendations
• Evaluating text-to-speech output for pronunciation, prosody, and naturalness in English
• Updating and expanding annotation guidelines when gaps or edge cases are identified
• Preparing and running calibration meetings with annotators
• Holding regular office hours during active studies for real-time annotator support
• Developing onboarding materials and resources for new annotators
• Writing QA reports on annotation quality and calibration outcomes
• Reviewing production audio and flagging quality issues to the team
• Investigating language-specific issues reported by customers and identifying root causes
• Auditing datasets for linguistic accuracy, completeness, and consistency

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Native-level proficiency in English as spoken in the United States
• Experience with data annotation, transcription, or language quality assurance
• Strong foundation in linguistics or a related field, with ability to apply concepts like phonetics, prosody, and intonation when evaluating speech and writing annotation guidelines
• Excellent written English proficiency for creating guidelines, feedback, reports, and team communications
• Ability to write clear, structured instructions and deliver specific, actionable feedback to annotators
• Comfortable working with data and metrics including inter-rater agreement scores, audit spreadsheets, and structured feedback templates
• Self-directed with ability to manage feedback cycles, QA reviews, and data projects without close oversight
• Authorization to work in your country of residence

Preferred:

• Experience writing or maintaining annotation guidelines or rubrics
• Experience training, mentoring, or managing other annotators
• Experience with audio evaluation, text-to-speech, or speech-to-text systems
• Conversational spoken English proficiency for meetings and calibration sessions
• Experience working with distributed, remote teams
