Software Development Engineer III, Maps API

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential geospatial technology organization seeking a Software Development Engineer III to join their Maps API team in Germany. Our client builds and maintains critical applications and infrastructure that power mapping services at global scale, handling billions of requests daily. This is a senior-level position where you'll lead engineering initiatives, design scalable systems, and mentor talented engineers while working with cutting-edge location technology.

Responsibilities

• Lead your engineering team to identify and scope well-defined technical tasks
• Execute on project scope and deliver high-quality solutions on schedule
• Design distributed systems and make architectural decisions that support rapid customer growth
• Build and deploy microservices using Python, NodeJS, and native AWS services
• Diagnose complex system behavior as global traffic patterns evolve
• Maintain highest-traffic read APIs and distributed ETL pipelines
• Mentor peers through 1:1s, design reviews, code reviews, and continuous technical guidance
• Promote operational excellence through testing, monitoring, documentation, and on-call support
• Reduce technical debt while optimizing application performance and feature velocity
• Foster a culture of collaboration, transparency, and data-driven decision-making

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 8-10+ years of experience building scalable, high-volume, low-latency backend services
• Proficiency with Python, NodeJS, and native AWS (CDK, ECS, Step Functions, Lambda, S3, RDS, CloudWatch, CloudFront)
• Experience building mapping and geospatial products
• Familiarity with code versioning tools such as GitHub
• Ability to independently perform development tasks based on designs and specifications
• Self-starter with strong communication skills and outcomes-oriented mindset
• Empirical analytical approach—develop hypotheses, conduct technical spikes, and clearly communicate findings
• Desire to share expertise through documentation, mentorship, pairing, and written/verbal discussion
• Commitment to working with and leading individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
• High-quality mindset including unit testing, proactive defect remediation, and production follow-through

Preferred qualifications:

• Proficiency in C++
• Experience with AI integration in engineering workflows
