Design Manager (Visual)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential open-source technology organization seeking a Design Manager (Visual) to lead their visual design practice. This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management, strategic direction, and direct design contribution. You'll oversee brand and digital experience work while developing a talented team of visual designers.

This position is remote within the EMEA region. The organization operates as a fully distributed team, with quarterly in-person meetings at various international locations.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of visual designers responsible for brand and digital experiences
• Provide critical, constructive feedback on design work to maintain excellence and consistency
• Contribute hands-on design work when complexity or capacity requires direct involvement
• Apply and evolve visual design guidelines across all organizational touchpoints
• Lead projects including marketing campaign assets, data visualization, print, and UI design
• Collaborate with design systems and web engineering teams to influence digital experiences
• Oversee and continuously improve operational workflows and production processes
• Work with marketing and engineering stakeholders to define and validate outcomes
• Support professional growth and skills development of team members
• Coordinate with design leadership to mature collective practices
• Communicate the value of design across the organization
• Drive cross-department collaboration on strategic projects

What We're Looking For

• Portfolio demonstrating excellence in leading visual design process and execution across diverse organizations
• Proven experience managing complex projects and design teams while remaining actively involved in hands-on work
• Advanced knowledge of visual design principles including typography, layout, color theory, and design systems
• Strong ability to manage ambiguity, competing priorities, and resource constraints
• Experience with both setting creative vision and executing detailed design work
• Clear design perspective balanced with openness to critique and feedback
• Deep commitment to usability and accessibility
• Demonstrated passion for mentorship and skills development
• Strong interest in technology and open-source ecosystems
• Self-motivated with a results-oriented approach and commitment to meeting objectives
• Exceptional educational background in design or compelling alternative career narrative
• Professional written and spoken English
• Willingness to travel up to four times annually for team meetings (up to two weeks per event)
