Language Lead – French (Contract)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology company seeking a native-level French speaker with linguistics expertise to serve as Language Lead for voice AI development. This is an ongoing contract engagement where you will own French language quality end-to-end, working remotely with some availability during US Pacific business hours.

This is not a standard annotation role. You will be the primary language resource and trusted point of contact for all French-related questions, quality decisions, and linguistic analysis. You will manage annotation quality, audit datasets, monitor product performance, investigate customer issues, and execute projects requiring deep linguistic expertise.

Responsibilities

• Answer questions from annotators about guidelines, edge cases, and language-specific issues through project communication channels
• Cascade new feedback, instructions, and rubric updates to annotation teams
• Audit annotator-rated audio files to verify ratings and written feedback align with rubrics
• Prepare written quality assessments with specific examples and recommendations
• Provide ground truth assessments of pronunciation, prosody, and naturalness for text-to-speech output
• Update and expand annotation guidelines when gaps or edge cases are identified
• Prepare and run calibration meetings with annotators
• Hold regular office hours during active studies for real-time annotator support
• Develop onboarding materials and resources for new annotators
• Write quality assurance reports on annotation quality and calibration outcomes
• Review production audio and flag quality issues to the development team
• Investigate language-specific customer-reported issues and identify root causes
• Audit datasets for linguistic accuracy, completeness, and consistency

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Native-level proficiency in French as spoken in France
• Experience with data annotation, transcription, or language quality assurance
• Strong foundation in linguistics or related field with ability to apply concepts like phonetics, prosody, and intonation when evaluating speech
• Strong written English proficiency for guidelines, feedback, reports, and team communication
• Ability to write clear, structured instructions and deliver specific, actionable feedback
• Comfortable working with data and metrics including inter-rater agreement scores, audit spreadsheets, and structured feedback templates
• Self-directed with ability to manage feedback cycles, QA reviews, and data projects independently
• Authorization to work in your country of residence as a contractor
• Approximately 40 hours per week availability with flexibility in scheduling

Preferred:

• Experience writing or maintaining annotation guidelines or rubrics
• Experience training, mentoring, or managing other annotators
• Experience with audio evaluation, text-to-speech, or speech-to-text systems
• Conversational spoken English proficiency for meetings and calibration syncs
• Experience working with distributed, remote teams

Employment Terms

This is a 1099 contract position, renewable by mutual agreement. You will control your own methods for completing assigned work, supply your own equipment, and are responsible for your own taxes. This role is not eligible for employee benefits. Hours may vary depending on active studies, data projects, and product needs. Participation in periodic coordination meetings during US Pacific hours is expected.
