UK Commercial Counsel Public Sector

Responsibilities

We are representing a fast-growing global technology organization seeking a UK Commercial Counsel – Public Sector to join their international legal team. In this remote role, you will report to senior legal leadership and manage the complete legal lifecycle of public sector contracts.

Your core responsibilities include:

• Managing cloud/SaaS and software subscription agreements, professional services contracts, and data processing agreements from bid support through execution and ongoing contract management
• Ensuring compliance with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 across all public sector engagements
• Supporting sales and RFP teams during live procurement processes, reviewing ITT/RFP requirements, drafting legal responses, and advising on contracting authority terms
• Advising internal stakeholders on regulatory and compliance obligations specific to supplying cloud services to the public sector
• Collaborating with legal team members across EMEA, USA, and APJ regions, as well as finance and compliance teams
• Monitoring legal and regulatory developments and proactively advising the business on their implications
• Building and strengthening workflow processes between legal and other departments, including exploring AI tools and automation opportunities
• Supporting regional and global legal team members on ad hoc projects as directed

What We're Looking For

Essential qualifications and experience:

• Qualified and legally permitted to practice law in the United Kingdom
• 4+ years of experience drafting and negotiating technology contracts (cloud/SaaS, software subscriptions, professional services agreements, data processing agreements) with public sector customers
• Strong working knowledge of public procurement law, public law principles, and contract law
• Understanding of cyber and information security obligations in technology contracts, including Cyber Essentials/Cyber Essentials Plus certification, ISO 27001 compliance, and NCSC guidance
• Ability to balance legal risks with business strategy in a fast-paced environment
• Proven ability to independently manage time and handle ambiguity with flexibility and patience

Preferred qualifications:

• Prior experience managing technology contracts for public sector entities, whether in-house in the private sector or with a central government department, local authority, or regulated public sector organisation
• Experience and knowledge of relevant laws in the UK, France, Australia, and Germany
• Working knowledge of complex software licensing and cloud business models
• Familiarity with data protection and privacy issues in technology transactions
• Prior experience representing high-growth companies
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a distributed team environment
• Willingness to participate in limited travel requirements
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
