About This Position

As Staff Astronomer I, you will be part of the Observing Support team at W. M. Keck Observatory, directly enabling scientific discovery for researchers worldwide. This role bridges observations planning, instrument expertise, and hands-on telescope support. You will work with visiting astronomers and the observatory's cutting-edge instrumentation to ensure successful observations while advancing the observatory's scientific mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support visiting observers during night-time observations at the telescope, providing real-time technical and scientific guidance
  • Assist with observation planning and preparation to optimize research outcomes
  • Maintain working knowledge of observatory instruments and telescope operations
  • Evaluate the quality and integrity of collected astronomical data
  • Contribute to proposal review and allocation processes
  • Mentor and train observers in best practices for effective use of observatory resources

Who We're Looking For

  • PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a closely related discipline
  • Demonstrated research experience in observational astronomy
  • Hands-on experience with telescope operations and astronomical instrumentation
  • Strong analytical and data analysis skills, with proficiency in programming (Python, IDL, or similar)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse groups of scientists
  • Ability to work night-time observing shifts and adapt to a rotating schedule
