Lead Data Engineer – Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX)

Role Overview

As a Lead Data Engineer within the IFX organization, you'll combine technical expertise with leadership to design, build, and optimize data platforms and pipelines. You'll work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment where your solutions directly impact millions of customers. This is an opportunity to tackle complex technical challenges while mentoring engineers and shaping the future of Capital One's data infrastructure.

What You'll Do

• Design and architect enterprise-scale data pipelines and infrastructure to support analytics, machine learning, and real-time applications
• Lead technical design decisions and code reviews, ensuring quality, scalability, and performance standards
• Mentor and guide junior data engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning
• Collaborate with product, analytics, and platform teams to translate business requirements into robust data solutions
• Optimize data systems for cost, latency, and reliability while maintaining security and compliance standards
• Evaluate and implement emerging data technologies and best practices
• Participate in on-call responsibilities and ensure operational excellence of data platforms

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in data engineering, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior technical role
• Expert-level proficiency in Python, Scala, Java, or similar languages
• Deep experience designing and managing distributed data systems and pipelines
• Strong understanding of data warehousing, data lakes, ETL/ELT processes, and modern analytics stacks
• Demonstrated experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Proven ability to lead technically, mentor engineers, and influence cross-functional teams
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
