Counsel, Business Operations and Regulatory (Remote)

Cengage Group seeks an experienced Legal Counsel to support Business Operations and Regulatory compliance for our remote-based team. This is a full-time role based in Newark, Essex County, offering the opportunity to drive legal strategy and governance across one of the education industry's leading platforms.

About the Role

As Counsel for Business Operations and Regulatory Affairs, you will serve as a trusted legal advisor to cross-functional leadership teams, balancing risk management with business growth. You'll handle a diverse portfolio of legal matters spanning corporate operations, regulatory compliance, and strategic business initiatives within the education sector.

What You'll Do

• Advise senior management on regulatory requirements and compliance obligations affecting business operations
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and service agreements with external partners and vendors
• Assess legal risks associated with new products, services, and business lines
• Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures across operational departments
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders—including finance, product, and marketing—to address legal considerations in strategic initiatives
• Maintain awareness of evolving regulatory landscapes relevant to education technology and publishing
• Support corporate governance and documentation requirements

What We're Looking For

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) and active bar admission in any US jurisdiction
• 5+ years of in-house legal experience, ideally in business operations or regulatory compliance
• Strong knowledge of corporate law, contract management, and regulatory frameworks
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
• Familiarity with the education sector or technology industry is a plus
• Comfort with remote work and self-directed collaboration
