About the Role
In this full-time position, you'll serve as a dedicated special education professional specializing in intellectual disability (ID) instruction. Working within our West Des Moines Community Schools district, you'll develop and implement individualized educational strategies that empower students to learn, grow, and succeed. Your role combines direct student instruction with collaborative planning to ensure every learner receives evidence-based, differentiated support tailored to their unique needs.
Responsibilities
- Deliver direct instruction and behavior support to students with intellectual disabilities across elementary and secondary grade levels
- Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and families to develop and refine individualized education plans (IEPs)
- Design and implement differentiated instructional strategies that address diverse learning profiles and developmental milestones
- Monitor student progress, collect assessment data, and adjust instruction to maximize learning outcomes
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive school culture that supports the social, emotional, and academic development of all students
- Participate in professional development and training, including district-provided Nonviolent Crisis Prevention (CPI) certification
Who We're Looking For
- Current Iowa teaching license with K-12 Instructional Strategist II: ID (intellectual disability) endorsement
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based special education practices and instructional design
- Genuine passion for supporting students with intellectual disabilities and fostering their independence
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with families, colleagues, and interdisciplinary teams
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth and staying current with best practices in special education
- Willingness to complete Nonviolent Crisis Prevention (CPI) training as part of district onboarding
