About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential on-demand marketplace client in their search for a Software Engineering Manager. This is a fully remote, people-first leadership role for an experienced EM who leads distributed engineering teams through both delivery excellence and individual career development.
Our client operates a fast-moving platform connecting consumers with service providers at significant scale. They are profitable, growing into new verticals, and need an engineering leader who can own both team performance and people outcomes as the organization scales.
Responsibilities
You will lead a cross-functional delivery team of 4-5 engineers, reporting to the Head of Engineering. Your core accountabilities include:
- People development: Build and execute concrete growth plans for every engineer on your team. You know where each person is headed and what they need to get there.
- Delivery ownership: Your team ships on cadence with predictable quality. You surface risk early, manage scope actively, and communicate commitment changes before they become surprises.
- Team health: Address conflict directly. Manage underperformers through documented processes. Protect and develop top performers.
- Cross-functional partnership: Serve as the interface between your team and Product, Design, and other engineering functions. Drive decisions forward without becoming a bottleneck.
- Technical direction: Stay close enough to the work to weigh in on system design and catch architectural risks, while keeping your focus on removing blockers rather than being in the weeds.
- AI adoption leadership: Actively introduce AI tools and workflows into how your team operates—code review, documentation, sprint planning, debugging. Set the pace for adoption, don't follow it.
What We're Looking For
Deeply AI-integrated, not just AI-aware. You've moved well beyond occasional AI prompting. You bring new AI workflows to your team, have used tools like Claude to accelerate code review, built prompts that help engineers write better tickets, or led adoption of AI coding assistants. When you see repetitive work consuming team time, your first instinct is to explore if AI can handle it. You actively experiment, share what works, and set the pace on AI adoption—you don't wait for direction.
A people developer, not just a delivery manager. You have concrete examples of career growth plans you've built, difficult conversations you've navigated, and underperformers you've managed through structured processes. Your 1:1 time focuses on people, not status updates.
Remote-native leadership experience. You've led fully remote teams as a default, not just as a pandemic workaround. You know how to build trust without physical proximity, run async decision-making effectively, and prevent distributed engineers from feeling isolated.
Direct in conflict. When tension arises—between engineers, between engineering and product, or around performance gaps—you address it directly and quickly. You don't let issues simmer.
Data-driven about people and delivery. You articulate team performance in metrics, not just intuition. You track velocity, retention risk, and individual growth, and you use that data to drive decisions.
Technically credible. You stay close enough to the code to earn your engineers' respect through code reviews, architectural input, and helping debug under pressure. You don't need to be the strongest technical contributor, but your team needs to believe you understand their work.
A delegator, not a bottleneck. You build teams that make good decisions without you. You coach engineers toward answers rather than providing them. When you go hands-on, it's deliberate and time-bounded.
This role is not for: Pure technical architects who'd rather design systems than develop people. Process managers focused on documentation over outcomes. Leaders treating this as a stepping stone back to IC work. Reactive firefighters who thrive in chaos. AI skeptics unwilling to actively drive adoption.
