About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential e-commerce platform company seeking a Software Engineer to join their Developer Experience and Tooling team. This is a fully remote position within Germany or select European locations where our client operates.
In this role, you'll build and maintain the command-line tools, APIs, and workflows that thousands of developers use daily. Your work will directly shape how engineers interact with an open-source commerce ecosystem—from local setup through CI/CD, deployment, and operations. You'll think holistically about developer workflows, working with containerization, cloud-native practices, GitOps, and telemetry to ensure what you build actually works in the real world.
Increasingly, this means designing tools that serve both human developers at the terminal and AI agents in CI pipelines. You'll also leverage AI-assisted development yourself to build and maintain solutions faster and more efficiently.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop CLI tools, APIs, and integrations that form the foundation of an open-source developer ecosystem
- Own developer workflows end-to-end: local development environments, CI/CD pipelines, deployment tooling, and operational monitoring
- Maintain high code quality standards with thorough testing, clean architecture, and long-term maintainability in mind
- Engage actively with the open-source community: review contributions, improve documentation, and gather feedback from daily users
- Collaborate across core engineering, SaaS/PaaS, documentation, and community teams to ensure tooling reflects real developer needs
- Apply containerization, cloud-native practices, and telemetry to validate that tools perform as intended
- Build tools optimized for both human interaction and programmatic consumption by AI agents and automation systems
What We're Looking For
- Golang experience is highly preferred, as key CLI tooling is Go-based. You don't need to be an expert—motivation and ability to learn quickly matter more
- PHP knowledge, ideally with Symfony, is a strong plus for deployment tooling and understanding the underlying platform ecosystem
- Genuine enthusiasm for developer tools and empathy for the people using them—whether through past DX-focused projects, CLI contributions, side projects, or simply being the person who files issues when workflows are unnecessarily complex
- Hands-on experience improving developer experience through CLI tooling, automation, APIs, scaffolding, or workflow optimization
- Comfort with automated testing and CI workflows as standard engineering practice
- Active use of AI-assisted development (coding, documentation, automation) with a critical eye for where AI genuinely improves efficiency. Familiarity with concepts like MCP or AI Skills is a plus
- Comfort working transparently in public: your code, pull requests, and technical decisions will be visible to an open-source community
- Clear, effective communication in asynchronous settings with both internal stakeholders and external contributors
- Excellent written and spoken English; German is a plus but not required
Before applying: Our talent team recommends spending about ten minutes exploring our client's open-source CLI repository. Install the tool, try some commands, and note what you'd change and why—you'll be asked about this during the interview process.
