Software Engineer, Backend (BI Platform)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology client in the food delivery sector, and we're seeking a Software Engineer, Backend (BI Platform) to join their London-based engineering organization. This is a hybrid role based at their London office, typically requiring three days on-site per week.

Our client operates at significant scale, serving millions of users daily through a complex three-sided marketplace. Their Core BI team builds and operates the services, integrations, and automation that power business intelligence across their global operations, enabling analysts, data scientists, engineers, and business teams to discover trusted data and make informed decisions.

Responsibilities

In this hands-on software and platform engineering role, you will:

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate backend services, APIs, and automation that support BI platforms including Looker and Sigma across multiple brands and regions
• Automate the platform lifecycle end-to-end, including provisioning, metadata management, permissions, migrations, archival, and validation to eliminate manual administration work
• Build integrations between BI platforms and the wider ecosystem: data warehouses, identity providers, orchestration systems, CI/CD pipelines, and internal developer tooling
• Improve availability, observability, performance, scalability, and security of the systems you own, carrying them in production with full operational accountability
• Leverage AI tooling in your engineering workflow and, where appropriate, build LLM-backed capabilities held to the same reliability and governance standards as all production systems
• Raise the engineering bar across service design, code review, testing, CI/CD, and documentation while improving developer experience for everyone building on the platform
• Own problems from discovery through design, implementation, deployment, and operational support
• Collaborate closely with Data Engineers, Analytics Engineers, Data Scientists, Product Managers, and business teams to turn recurring user needs into durable, self-service capabilities

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production backend, platform, or infrastructure systems
• Strong Python skills with a focus on readable, maintainable, well-tested code; comfort with SQL and working understanding of data modeling and warehousing concepts
• Experience building and owning APIs, integrations, or automation in production, with sound judgment on service boundaries, authentication, data contracts, and failure modes
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD, containers and Kubernetes, observability, debugging, and incident response; you expect to operate what you build
• Practical experience using AI tools (LLMs, agentic workflows, AI-assisted development) as part of your engineering practice, with good judgment about where they add value
• Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of ambiguous problems, clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and comfort self-organizing in fast-paced, distributed environments

Nice to have:

• Experience owning or integrating with BI platforms such as Looker, Sigma, or comparable tools; familiarity with semantic layers such as LookML or dbt
• Experience automating identity and access through Okta, SCIM, or role-based access controls, or building multi-tenant platforms across brands and regions
• Experience shipping LLM-backed features to real users (retrieval, grounding, evaluation), or with MCP, agent frameworks, or tool-calling in production

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process with our recruiting team and will be competitive with the London market for this level of experience.
