Senior Machine Learning Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential quantitative finance organization seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer for their London office. Our client applies advanced AI and machine learning techniques to investment management and has built a multibillion-dollar platform at the frontier of this field.

This role sits at the intersection of research and engineering. You'll partner directly with PhD researchers to translate novel ideas into production systems, build the infrastructure that powers quantitative trading strategies, and solve open-ended technical challenges requiring strong mathematical intuition.

Responsibilities

• Partner with research staff to design, implement, and productize machine learning models for quantitative strategies
• Develop and maintain complex data pipelines, including ingestion, feature engineering, validation, and quality monitoring
• Translate research prototypes into performant, well-tested, production-ready code
• Build extensible tools and frameworks that accelerate model development and experimentation
• Supervise and remediate data quality issues across research and production environments
• Lead projects autonomously from requirements through delivery, making decisions about scope, dependencies, and trade-offs with emphasis on long-term maintainability
• Coordinate deployment efforts while guiding junior engineers and researchers; align with stakeholders on ownership and priorities
• Foster engineering consistency, standards, and best practices within the research organization

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or related quantitative field
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and systems design
• Demonstrated mathematical maturity—comfort with statistics, linear algebra, optimization, and probability concepts and notation
• Deep proficiency in Python; experience with R and/or C/C++ strongly preferred
• Extensive experience with numerical and data science libraries (NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar)
• Proven experience building or maintaining machine learning systems in distributed computing environments
• Proficiency developing in Linux environments with attention to performance, correctness, and reproducibility
• Exceptional attention to detail, particularly with imperfect or heterogeneous data
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with researchers whose primary expertise is not software engineering

Preferred:

• Experience with experiment management, model evaluation pipelines, or ML workflow orchestration
• Familiarity with modern ML infrastructure patterns (model serving, feature stores, distributed training)
• Experience with performance profiling and optimization of numerical or modeling code
• Prior exposure to financial data, time-series analysis, or quantitative research environments
