Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential observability technology organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to work on their continuous profiling database platform. This is a fully remote position based in Germany.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own meaningful projects end to end and directly influence the product roadmap:

  • Lead projects from concept to production rollout, including design, delivery, operations, and customer follow-up for features such as read path efficiency improvements and trace-to-profile correlation
  • Design, build, and operate core components of a distributed database system, focusing on ingestion, storage, and query optimization while balancing performance, cost, and complexity trade-offs
  • Engage directly with customers to understand pain points, translate requirements into deliverable solutions, and shape the product roadmap (this team operates without a dedicated product manager)
  • Drive operational excellence by owning outcomes against concrete SLOs and unit cost targets, reducing operational toil through automation, and improving on-call stability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate profiling capabilities throughout the broader observability platform
  • Support teammates through design conversations, code review, and pair programming in a fully remote environment
  • Participate in EMEA on-call rotation for services you build, treating incident response and post-incident learning as core engineering responsibilities
  • Contribute to open source development, engage with the community, review external contributions, and help steer the project publicly

Example projects include building adaptive profiling strategies that reduce cost while maintaining signal quality, implementing query fairness and async execution for large-scale queries, creating bi-directional correlation between traces and profiles, designing AI-agent-ready APIs and CLI tooling, automating infrastructure lifecycle management, and evolving the platform to support OpenTelemetry profiling standards.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

  • Solid experience with systems programming languages such as Go, Rust, C, C++, Python, or Java (the codebase is written in Go)
  • Proven experience building and operating distributed systems in production cloud environments, with understanding of multi-tenant data system performance, reliability, and cost optimization
  • Strong product sense with comfort talking to customers, handling ambiguity, and breaking complex problems into manageable deliverables
  • Curiosity and courage to ask hard questions and challenge the status quo when appropriate
  • Strong software craftsmanship: ability to write clean, robust, performant code that others can maintain, with good judgment on when to optimize versus ship
  • Operational mindset with on-call experience, SRE-style work, or infrastructure-as-code background, treating reliability as a core feature
  • Pragmatic problem-solving approach that breaks complex challenges into short feedback loops: analyze, design, deliver MVP, learn, iterate
  • Clear communication skills for fully remote, asynchronous collaboration through writing, code reviews, and shipped work

Bonus qualifications:

  • Experience with profiling and performance engineering tools such as flamegraphs, pprof, or perf
  • Experience with OpenTelemetry or large-scale observability systems
  • Experience operating multi-tenant SaaS infrastructure at scale on Kubernetes
  • Experience building for AI/LLM consumers with structured APIs, metadata endpoints, and deterministic outputs
  • Open-source contribution or maintainership with experience engaging communities publicly
  • Previous hands-on experience as a user of observability platforms in production environments
  • Experience working on fully remote, globally distributed teams
