Psychiatric Emergency Room Registered Nurse

About the Role

As a Psychiatric Emergency Room Registered Nurse, you'll provide direct patient care in a fast-paced psychiatric emergency setting. You'll collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and behavioral health specialists to stabilize patients in acute crises, assess safety and risk factors, and connect them with appropriate treatment pathways and community resources.

What You'll Do

• Perform rapid psychiatric and medical assessments on patients presenting with acute mental health crises, including suicidality, aggression, psychosis, or substance intoxication
• Administer psychiatric medications safely while monitoring therapeutic effects and managing side effects
• Apply crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to maintain safety for patients and staff in volatile situations
• Implement continuous observation and 1:1 monitoring for patients at highest risk of harm
• Work alongside the psychiatric team to develop individualized treatment and discharge plans
• Document clinical assessments, behavioral observations, vital signs, and interventions with precision
• Provide education to patients and families about psychiatric diagnoses, medications, and coping strategies
• Respond rapidly to medical emergencies and escalating behavioral situations in an unpredictable environment

What We're Looking For

• Active, unrestricted RN license in North Carolina
• Background in psychiatric nursing, emergency nursing, or acute mental health care (preferred)
• Sound knowledge of psychotropic medications and their clinical management
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with diverse patient populations, including those who are agitated or in crisis
• Ability to remain composed, focused, and clinically effective during high-acuity, unpredictable situations
• Proficiency in suicide risk assessment and threat evaluation
• Commitment to patient-centered, evidence-based nursing practice
• Current BLS certification; ACLS certification preferred
