Xcel Energy is seeking a Staff, Senior, or Principal Mechanical Engineer for our Denver, Colorado office. This is a full-time position offering technical leadership and the opportunity to drive engineering excellence across our operations.
About the Role
You'll serve as a technical authority and subject matter expert, guiding complex mechanical engineering initiatives and mentoring the engineering team. In this Staff, Senior, or Principal role, you'll balance hands-on design work with strategic leadership, influencing key decisions on systems, equipment, and project direction. Your expertise will shape how we approach mechanical engineering challenges across the organization.
What You'll Do
- Design, analyze, and optimize mechanical systems and equipment for operational reliability and performance
- Provide technical guidance on complex engineering problems and develop innovative solutions
- Review engineering work and mentor junior and mid-level mechanical engineers
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across electrical, civil, and control systems disciplines
- Ensure all designs meet safety standards, regulatory requirements, and company specifications
- Document technical standards, design specifications, and engineering best practices
- Contribute to project planning and participate in major technical decisions
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field
- 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience with clear progression toward senior-level responsibility
- Proficiency with CAD software and mechanical design tools
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively across teams
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
- Background with industrial equipment, rotating machinery, or thermal systems a plus
