Director of Accounting – CPA

The Academy Charter School is seeking a Director of Accounting with CPA credentials to lead financial operations for our Uniondale, Nassau County campus. This is a full-time position managing accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance for an innovative charter school committed to educational excellence.

About the Role

As Director of Accounting, you will oversee all accounting functions and financial compliance for The Academy Charter School. Working closely with school leadership, you'll ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory adherence, and sound fiscal management that supports the school's mission and operational sustainability.

What You'll Do

• Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance
• Prepare and review financial statements, budget reports, and compliance documentation
• Develop and monitor annual budgets; track expenses and provide financial analysis to leadership
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local accounting standards and charter school regulations
• Oversee payroll processing, employee benefits administration, and related tax filings
• Conduct audits and maintain internal controls to safeguard school assets
• Collaborate with school administrators and the board on financial planning and fiscal strategy
• Manage accounting software systems and implement process improvements

What We're Looking For

• Current CPA license in New York (or ability to obtain one)
• 5+ years of accounting or financial management experience
• Demonstrated expertise in nonprofit or education accounting (charter school or K-12 experience strongly preferred)
• Proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheet analysis
• Strong understanding of budgeting, financial controls, and compliance requirements
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Professional communication and collaborative leadership abilities
