Ikwezi Mining is recruiting a Blaster for its mining operations in South Africa. This full-time position is essential to our coal extraction activities, requiring skilled professionals to plan, execute, and oversee drilling and blasting operations safely and efficiently.
What This Role Involves
As a Blaster at Ikwezi Mining, you will manage the complete drilling and blasting cycle that enables us to extract coal from our South African sites. Your expertise will ensure that all blast events occur safely, within regulatory requirements, and at the operational standards our mine demands. You will work closely with engineering and safety teams to translate geological surveys and production plans into precise, controlled blast events.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Carry out drilling operations according to site-specific blast plans and approved protocols
- Prepare and load blast holes with explosive materials, maintaining strict adherence to safety standards
- Detonate charges in a controlled manner to fragment ore and rock as planned
- Monitor all blasting activities and document results for compliance and quality assurance
- Inspect and maintain drilling equipment and blast machinery to ensure reliability
- Collaborate with geotechnical and production teams to optimise blast design and fragmentation outcomes
- Enforce all safety protocols and procedures on the blast site and contribute to a culture of zero harm
Skills & Qualifications
- Formal blasting certification or equivalent recognised qualification in explosives handling
- Proven experience in underground or opencast mining blast operations
- In-depth knowledge of drilling equipment, explosives properties, and blast engineering
- Strong understanding of South African mining regulations and safety legislation
- Ability to read and interpret blast designs and geological data
- Physical fitness to work in demanding mining environments
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with multi-disciplinary crews
- Attention to detail and commitment to operational and environmental compliance
