Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a well-funded Berlin-based data infrastructure startup in their search for a Backend Engineer. Our client is building cutting-edge technology that powers real-time data systems at scale, serving enterprise customers globally. This is an early-stage opportunity where you'll work directly with experienced founders and help define both the technical architecture and engineering culture.

This role is based in Berlin and offers the intensity and ownership that comes with joining a fast-moving startup environment.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale high-performance, low-latency backend systems using Python
• Take complete ownership of features and projects from concept through production deployment
• Ship code rapidly, iterate based on feedback, and continuously improve system performance
• Contribute to defining engineering best practices and technical culture as an early team member
• Collaborate directly with founders to solve novel technical challenges in data infrastructure
• Wear multiple hats and adapt quickly as priorities shift in a startup environment

What We're Looking For

Core Requirements:

• Deep technical expertise in Python with proven ability to build production systems
• Track record of impressive technical achievements that demonstrate 10x builder capabilities
• Hungry, competitive mindset with resilience to work through ambiguity and challenges
• Fast learner who thrives in chaotic, high-pressure environments
• Hands-on and pragmatic approach to problem-solving
• Genuine desire to work in startup culture with high autonomy and accountability

Helpful Experience:

• Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Containerization and orchestration with Kubernetes, Docker, or Docker Compose
• Previous work at fast-growing startups or early-stage companies
• Comfort using AI coding tools to accelerate development
• Ability to make pragmatic trade-offs in code quality when speed matters
