Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce client in Portugal seeking an experienced Backend Engineer to join their growing engineering team. Our client operates a high-scale online marketplace serving millions of monthly visitors and managing tens of thousands of transactions weekly. This is a hybrid role based in Lisbon, requiring a minimum of two days per week in the office.

As a Backend Engineer, you'll work within a small, autonomous Agile team that has end-to-end ownership of microservices. You'll collaborate across disciplines to build scalable, resilient features that directly impact the platform's performance and user experience. This role offers significant scope to create visible impact in a fast-paced, product-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable microservices and backend features
• Take ownership of service quality, resilience, and maintainability throughout the entire product lifecycle
• Collaborate closely with product designers, product owners, and frontend and mobile engineers to deliver product innovations
• Build backend services with a focus on high availability, low latency, and data consistency
• Identify and implement improvements to engineering processes and development practices
• Document and advocate for development best practices across the engineering team
• Fix bugs and refactor code to maintain product reliability and code quality
• Participate in dedicated innovation weeks to experiment with new technologies and share knowledge across domains

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of software development experience, specifically with object-oriented programming
• 3+ years working with customer-facing products in e-commerce, fintech, or SaaS environments
• Proven experience designing, implementing, and deploying backend services at scale
• Strong understanding of API design, SQL, and relational databases
• Excellent English communication skills with comfort documenting work and sharing ideas openly
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to take initiative and contribute actively to team success
• Solution-oriented approach to problem-solving and willingness to explore alternative approaches
• Commitment to continuous learning and developing new technical skills
• Prior experience with Ruby is beneficial but not required—we value passion for learning

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and will be competitive based on your experience level and competencies. Our client also offers meal allowance, health insurance from day one (including dental), work-from-home allowance, and commuting support.
