WVU Medicine seeks a detail-oriented Trauma Registrar to join our Critical Care Trauma Institute in West Virginia. About This Position

The Trauma Registrar is the clinical data steward for our trauma program, responsible for managing the complete lifecycle of patient trauma information from initial identification through analysis and reporting. You'll work at the intersection of healthcare quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance—collecting and maintaining trauma data that helps us understand injury patterns, evaluate clinical outcomes, and continuously improve how we serve trauma patients. This role requires technical precision, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to data integrity that directly impacts patient care and research initiatives across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify trauma patients meeting registry inclusion criteria from emergency department, operating room, and hospital admission records
  • Abstract comprehensive and accurate data from trauma patient medical records in a timely manner
  • Review, analyze, and interpret data from patient information systems to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Reconcile missing or conflicting data and coordinate with external agencies to obtain necessary medical records
  • Collect, enter, and submit trauma data to state regulatory agencies as required
  • Generate monthly dashboards and routine reports, annual reports, and custom statistical analyses
  • Serve as an active member of the Trauma Committee and participate in regional and state trauma meetings
  • Maintain current knowledge of trauma data standards through professional development and registry-specific training
  • Validate and ensure accuracy of all trauma registry data on an ongoing basis

Who We're Looking For

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Preferred Certifications: Certified Trauma Registrar credential from the American Trauma Society and/or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) from AHIMA
  • Experience: One or more years in trauma registry or health information management
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with medical records, medical terminology, coding concepts, and anatomy and physiology
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based work in a standard office environment
