The Opportunity
As Project Engineer, you'll manage the complete design lifecycle for civil and land development projects, including roadway networks, utility systems, stormwater infrastructure, and site grading. You'll work in a collaborative environment alongside architects, landscape professionals, and other specialists to deliver high-quality designs that meet client and regulatory requirements. Your technical expertise will guide projects through complex permitting processes, from site evaluation through construction administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive site assessments using survey data and existing site conditions to identify constraints; determine buildable areas, drainage patterns, and utility corridors per design standards
- Lead preliminary design phases by applying zoning ordinances, buffer requirements, and local regulations; develop lot layouts and preliminary utility and grading plans
- Design roadway and parking configurations using industry-standard CAD tools, ensuring compliance with alignment standards and traffic control requirements
- Create stormwater management systems, including drainage and detention designs, culvert sizing, and erosion control measures using specialized modeling software
- Develop water distribution networks and wastewater collection systems with proper meter locations, backflow protection, and fire connections
- Prepare grading and earthwork plans with site elevations and accessibility verification; conduct site visits to confirm conditions and refine designs
- Design roadway geometry and pavement layouts with attention to horizontal and vertical alignment, curve banking, intersection design, and traffic control plans
- Compile engineering analyses and documentation for agency submission; lead permitting applications and regulatory responses
- Coordinate with internal and external teams to resolve conflicts and integrate multidisciplinary input
- Manage project schedules proactively and adapt to changing timelines while maintaining design quality
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited program in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field
- Engineer-in-Training (EI) credential required; Professional Engineer (PE) license or active pursuit of licensure strongly preferred
- Minimum five years of civil site design or land development experience
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and CAD best practices
- Deep working knowledge of land development regulations, zoning codes, stormwater management standards, and permitting procedures at local and state levels
- Strong project management abilities for concurrent assignments, budget tracking, and tight deadlines
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to evaluate complex technical challenges and formulate practical solutions
- Proven communication skills for coordinating with clients, agencies, subconsultants, and internal teams
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and fostering team collaboration
- Track record of building client relationships and ensuring satisfaction
- High attention to accuracy and detail in all deliverables
