Tech Lead Manager – Lakebase

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential data infrastructure organization seeking a Tech Lead Manager to join their London office. This is a founding leadership position on a managed database service that integrates transactional workloads with analytics and AI capabilities.

This is a hands-on Tech Lead Manager role: you'll spend the majority of your time driving architecture, solving complex technical problems, and writing code, while also leading and developing a team of approximately five engineers who will report directly to you. It's an ideal position for a strong senior engineer ready to take on people management without stepping away from technical work.

Responsibilities

You will lead one of three specialized teams:

• Platform Reliability — Evolve system reliability through cross-functional infrastructure, observability, SLI/SLO definition and measurement, and operational efficiency via AI-powered automation for both internal and customer-facing systems.
• Proxy Engineering — Build the network edge handling all client connections and query traffic across multiple data protocols (Postgres, HTTP, WebSockets). Solve load balancing, authentication, and data access challenges at high throughput with focus on performance and reliability.
• Storage Engineering — Lead continuous delivery within a team managing storage services hosting millions of databases across dozens of regions. Partner with peer engineering teams and drive operational excellence in 24/7 system operation.

In this role, you will:

• Own execution and on-time, high-quality delivery for your team of 5-6 engineers
• Drive architecture and design decisions while writing code on the most challenging technical problems
• Set and uphold technical standards through architecture reviews, testing practices, and engineering excellence
• Grow your team members through clear feedback and career development
• Align with partner teams on dependencies and unblock cross-cutting projects
• Partner with engineering and product leadership to shape long-term roadmap delivery

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of engineering experience, including time as a tech lead or senior engineer driving projects end-to-end
• Strong hands-on technical depth with ability to design systems, write code, and go deep on architecture for large-scale distributed services
• Experience with large-scale distributed services and associated processes around testing, monitoring, and SLAs
• People management or tech lead experience — you're ready to take on direct reports and lead them effectively
• Ability to align multiple stakeholders on competing priorities
• Skill in balancing short-term delivery against long-term stability
• BS (or higher) in Computer Science or related field
