Engineering Lead

About This Opportunity

We are representing a well-funded fintech client in Berlin that is building a modern platform for accounting and payroll services. This is an Engineering Lead role working directly with a founding technical team to define architecture, establish engineering standards, and ship high-impact features across the entire stack.

This is an onsite position in Berlin requiring frequent context switching between infrastructure, backend systems, integrations, AI initiatives, and frontend work. You will take end-to-end ownership of architectural decisions and work in a small, senior team environment where your technical choices directly shape the product.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy solutions across the full technology stack including backend services, infrastructure, and frontend development
• Take end-to-end ownership of architectural decisions from initial design through production deployment and ongoing support
• Collaborate with senior engineers to refine solutions and ensure they meet business objectives without sacrificing quality
• Maintain detailed technical documentation of decisions, processes, and system architecture
• Build and ship features based on evolving requirements while balancing complexity with long-term maintainability
• Foster transparency and share technical insights consistently across the team

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• 8 to 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong track record in startup or scaleup environments
• Experience across multiple companies where you have seen different architecture patterns and learned what works in practice
• Background at Staff, Principal, or Senior Engineer level focused on building and owning systems rather than coordination or management
• Strong command of at least two of the following: Java/Kotlin, JavaScript/TypeScript, React/React Native, Python
• Expertise in architectural decision-making and system design that balances immediate needs with long-term scalability
• Autonomous and pragmatic approach: you can frame problems independently, design solutions, and execute without extensive support
• Strong written communication skills with a default practice of documenting technical decisions and rationale
• Hands-on execution focus: you thrive on practical outcomes and shipping production code

Preferred Experience:

• Experience building in regulated or compliance-heavy domains
• Familiarity with accounting, payroll, or tax systems (German market knowledge is a plus)
• Experience integrating LLMs or AI capabilities into production systems
