Senior Android Engineer CI/CD – (Freelancer)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential healthcare technology organization seeking a Senior Android Engineer with CI/CD expertise for a freelance engagement. This is a hands-on role where you'll own the mobile build pipeline for a platform that directly impacts frontline healthcare workers. The initial contract spans a minimum of three months, with flexibility for candidates based in France, Germany, or England. Occasional travel to Berlin is expected, with expenses covered.

Responsibilities

• Own the mobile CI/CD pipeline end-to-end, managing approximately 70 Kotlin Multiplatform jobs covering lint, testing, and store releases
• Act as the primary responder when builds break, triaging failures and unblocking 40+ engineers to keep development moving
• Define service-level objectives for CI health, restructure the pipeline to reduce P95 times from ~90 minutes to acceptable thresholds, and eliminate unnecessary or redundant jobs
• Implement visibility and accountability for test flakiness through dashboards, quarantining strategies, and clear ownership assignment
• Document your approach, experiments, and solutions to build institutional knowledge and strengthen the engineering culture
• Debug both pipeline configuration and the Android application itself when issues arise

What We're Looking For

• Several years of professional Android development experience using Kotlin and Compose, with applications shipped to production users
• Deep expertise in Gradle, including multi-module builds, build caching, task/configuration avoidance, and performance optimization
• Proven experience owning CI/CD infrastructure, ideally with GitLab CI (runners, caches, artifacts, change-based gating)
• Comfort working with unglamorous infrastructure layers: emulators, macOS/iOS build agents, Appium, E2E test stability, and memory-intensive Kotlin compilation
• Fluent English (C1 level); German is a plus but not required
• Bonus: Kotlin Multiplatform or iOS experience
• Realistic expectations — this is a pipeline with known issues (including test suites with 16-18% failure rates) that needs systematic improvement, not greenfield work
