Backend Developer (Rust)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential B2B technology company in the automotive sector. They're building core infrastructure from scratch with a small, high-impact engineering team where individual technical decisions have lasting influence on the product direction.

We're seeking a Backend Developer with deep Rust expertise to build and evolve a custom distributed execution engine—a horizontally scalable, step-based system driving production order processing and ETL pipelines. This is not a role about assembling managed services; you'll be designing coordination and fault-tolerance mechanisms from first principles.

Responsibilities

• Research, design, and develop a distributed graph execution engine written in Rust
• Design and implement executor node implementations for third-party system integrations
• Build infrastructure for distributed execution—deployment pipelines, observability, and site reliability
• Design coordination and fault-tolerance mechanisms from scratch, handling partial failures, node coordination, and recovery within the engine itself
• Develop and maintain logistics and ETL workflows tied to core business operations

What We're Looking For

Must-have:

• 7+ years of backend development experience
• 3+ years of professional Rust experience
• Strong practical understanding of distributed systems and fault-tolerant software architecture
• Familiarity with several of the following: graph theory, type theory, parsers and compilers, and related computer science fundamentals (distributed systems experience is weighted most heavily)
• Real-world DevOps experience
• Location in Berlin or within approximately 4–5 hours' travel of Berlin

Nice to have:

• Background in C/C++ before transitioning to Rust
• Experience with key-value stores or distributed databases (FoundationDB, TiKV)
• Frontend web development experience
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools
• Understanding of WASM runtimes
• Previous experience with logistics or process management systems

Full-time position (~40 hours/week) with meaningful overlap with Central European time. Employment via official contract in Germany or B2B arrangement elsewhere in Europe.
