Trade Compliance Specialist (Europe)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential B2B marketplace client in the luxury goods sector that is scaling rapidly across Europe and global markets. They are creating a brand-new role for a Trade Compliance Specialist focused on Europe, sitting within their fulfilment operations team. This is a remote position open to candidates based anywhere in Europe, with preference for the Netherlands or Spain.

As this marketplace expands into new product categories and jurisdictions, cross-border shipment complexity has increased significantly. You will own the execution layer of trade compliance—preparing documentation, applying tariff classifications, managing customs brokers, and running duty drawback programs—while partnering closely with internal legal and compliance teams on policy and interpretation.

This is an individual contributor role with high autonomy. You will be building operational processes from the ground up, not inheriting existing systems.

Responsibilities

• Prepare all shipment documentation and commercial invoices for cross-border movements, ensuring accurate records are retrieved from brokers and carriers and stored centrally
• Apply approved HTS classifications and country-of-origin determinations consistently across shipment workflows and internal systems
• Manage day-to-day relationships with customs brokers, coordinating clearance activities, reviewing broker performance, and ensuring alignment with internal classification standards
• Monitor landed shipping costs, identify unexpected duty outcomes, and file claims with customs brokers when errors occur
• Resolve routine customs queries during clearance and ensure accurate import/export declarations
• Own the duty drawback program operationally, acting as the internal point of contact with third-party providers and validating claims before submission
• Monitor compliance of the US import bond to maintain business continuity for key trade lanes
• Partner with overseas manufacturers (starting with India) to ensure their export documentation supports compliant, duty-efficient shipping
• Identify and implement duty-saving opportunities through free trade agreements (e.g. India-UK, EU-UK, EU-India, UAE-India)
• Build scalable trade compliance processes as the business enters new markets, escalating complex classification or legal questions to internal experts

What We're Looking For

Must have:

• Proven experience in global trade compliance or customs operations, with a strong track record in US, UK, and EU import/export
• Direct experience managing customs broker relationships and handling shipment documentation at volume
• Experience filing duty drawback or tariff reclaim claims
• Comfortable working autonomously as an individual contributor with high ownership
• Detail-oriented and process-minded; able to establish new workflows rather than following existing playbooks
• Based in the EU or UK, with flexibility to work across time zones
• Strong stakeholder management skills, coordinating external partners (brokers, carriers, manufacturers) and internal teams (legal, fulfilment, operations)
• Commercial mindset that connects compliance work to cost savings and business impact

Nice to have:

• Experience with free trade agreements and preferential duty schemes (e.g. India–UK, EU–UK, EU–India, UAE–India)
• Background in jewellery, diamonds, gemstones, or other high-value/luxury goods logistics
• Experience with Indian export processes
• Experience in a fast-scaling, international e-commerce or marketplace business
