Director, Data Engineering (RWD)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential life sciences organization seeking a Director of Data Engineering to lead real-world data (RWD) initiatives within their enterprise data lake environment. This is a strategic leadership role based in India, reporting directly to senior technology leadership.

Our client is building out their data engineering capabilities to support clinical trials, safety analytics, and regulatory operations. You'll be responsible for architecting and delivering standardized data products across multiple domains while leading a global engineering team.

Responsibilities

• Lead the strategy, design, and roadmap for lakehouse architecture based on medallion principles supporting clinical, financial, and safety analytics
• Direct data engineering activities across ingestion, transformation, storage, and optimization within the enterprise data lake
• Oversee performance, quality, reliability, security, and lifecycle management of data lake environments
• Build scalable engineering pipelines aligned with governance and compliance requirements
• Serve as subject matter expert in data delivery, aligning data products with organizational priorities
• Champion cross-functional prioritization and delivery processes to ensure cohesive outcomes
• Build, mentor, and direct global data engineering teams to deliver operational excellence
• Drive capability development in cloud engineering, Databricks, CI/CD, SQL, and Python
• Promote a culture of innovation, operational rigor, and customer-focused delivery

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• 12+ years of IT experience developing and maintaining large-scale enterprise integration platforms across multiple environments
• Exposure to real-world data in clinical or medical settings
• 8+ years leading teams in data delivery management, including major projects in data integration and analytics
• 6+ years of management experience developing applications in new computing architectures and managing technical teams through full project lifecycles
• Experience managing financial resources across multiple concurrent projects

Technical Requirements:

• Extensive experience implementing enterprise data initiatives on cloud platforms
• Demonstrated expertise with Azure Databricks and cloud data platforms
• Significant experience with medallion architecture-based data lake implementations
• Advanced proficiency in SQL querying and query tuning (mandatory)
• Proficiency in Python and modern data management tools
• Deep understanding of architectural best practices and application design
• Knowledge of relational databases, data transformation, and development frameworks

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with GxP regulations in life sciences environments
• Background in clinical data management or pharmaceutical operations

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field required
