Staff Backend Engineer, Commerce

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to lead technical vision and architecture for their revenue infrastructure. This is a production-critical role owning the systems behind billing, subscriptions, payments, pricing, and entitlements across self-serve and enterprise offerings.

You'll define the technical foundation that enables rapid pricing experimentation and seamless monetization—building configuration-driven platforms, establishing service boundaries, and creating abstractions that let product teams launch without becoming billing experts. This role drives decisions that shape how the company monetizes its next growth phase, working across Engineering, Product, Finance, and Sales in a high-ambiguity, high-impact environment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as technical leader within the commerce platform team, partnering with Engineering, Product, and Design leadership to translate business strategy into technical direction
• Define and evolve architectural vision for monetization systems, balancing immediate delivery with long-term durability and operational excellence
• Lead strategic platform initiatives including decoupling billing systems, consolidating pricing infrastructure, and building flexible frameworks for rapid experimentation
• Own revenue-critical systems across billing, pricing, payments, checkout, and entitlements—ensuring resilience, observability, and financial accuracy
• Drive measurable improvements in performance, reliability, conversion, and retention through profiling, optimization, and architectural refinement
• Design APIs and data models that serve internal teams, partners, and user-facing products while enabling safe evolution without breaking integrations
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners including product, finance, support, and sales to deliver seamless monetization experiences
• Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and raise technical standards across the organization
• Champion documentation and developer experience to reduce friction and accelerate adoption

What We're Looking For

• Proven engineering impact: Track record driving outcomes in complex production systems at scale, with ability to navigate shifting requirements and make data-informed tradeoff decisions. Many strong candidates have 8+ years of experience, though we prioritize impact over tenure.
• Billing and payments domain expertise: Deep knowledge of billing systems, subscription management, payment processing, or financial platforms. Understanding of metered billing, pricing models, entitlements, revenue recognition, and the operational complexity spanning sales, finance, support, and product.
• API and platform design: Experience designing APIs serving multiple consumers and evolving systems without breaking existing integrations. Demonstrated ability identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks through profiling, caching, and database optimization.
• Outcome-driven approach: Focus on customer problems and business results rather than technical elegance. Willingness to rethink or pivot when it better serves outcomes.
• Cross-team leadership: History leading technical initiatives spanning multiple teams with end-to-end ownership—gathering requirements, surfacing risks, aligning stakeholders, and driving ambiguous problems to measurable results.
• AI fluency: Regular use of AI coding tools with clear judgment about where they accelerate delivery versus where human oversight is essential, particularly in high-correctness domains like payments.
• Comfort with complexity: Ability to navigate large, mature codebases and find leverage points for meaningful progress.

Location and Work Arrangement

This role is open to candidates in the Americas (North, Central, and South America), EMEA, APAC, and LATAM regions. The position is fully remote.
