Lead Automation & Design Engineer (Remote, NC, US, 99999)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential logistics organization seeking a Lead Automation & Design Engineer to join their remote team. This role offers the opportunity to lead complex warehouse design projects from concept through implementation, working with cutting-edge automation and material handling solutions.

In this position, you will take ownership of developing comprehensive design packages that include facility layouts, automation designs, material handling equipment specifications, and process optimization. You'll manage vendor relationships, oversee implementation phases, and mentor junior engineers while driving innovative solutions for distribution center operations.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with data analytics teams to analyze order profiles, storage media applications, product slotting, velocity analysis, and SKU affinities
• Prepare engineering calculations and documentation describing solutions and detailed operating concepts including storage capacity, facility sizing, zoning, and slotting strategies
• Design overall facility layouts, storage media, and material flow paired with appropriate equipment supporting operational concepts
• Support business development efforts by contributing to RFP responses, developing presentation materials, and presenting to potential clients
• Evaluate and compare manual versus automated warehouse solutions, developing detailed ROI analysis and payback calculations to drive data-based design recommendations
• Lead detailed engineering processes on new projects, taking designs from conceptualization to full implementation-ready specifications through data analysis, material handling specs, vendor quote management, and generating detailed AutoCAD layouts
• Conduct joint planning sessions and gap analysis to resolve issues, identify scope changes, and provide necessary documentation and escalation
• Prepare WMS configuration documentation including location setup, slotting, zoning, put-away and picking sequences, and allocation rules
• Manage material handling and automation vendors through scheduling, permitting, installation, commissioning, and punch list completion
• Validate equipment installation and conduct performance testing
• Provide post-implementation support and troubleshooting
• Mentor and develop junior engineers on the team

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field, or equivalent work or military experience
• Minimum 4 years of engineering experience in supply chain management, logistics, warehousing, or related field
• Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
• Ability to travel up to 50%

Preferred qualifications:

• 8-10 years of experience as an Industrial Engineer
• Experience with advanced data tools including SQL, Power BI, and Python
• Extensive AutoCAD experience
• Time study measurement experience (MOST certification is a plus)
• Third-party logistics (3PL), warehousing, distribution center, or fulfillment center experience
• Strong analytical capabilities
• Project and resource management experience
