Role Overview
As a Peer Support Specialist at Horizons in Reno County, you bring personal recovery or lived experience and a genuine desire to help others navigate their own paths. Your role centers on building trust, sharing experience authentically, and connecting people to resources and community—all cornerstones of recovery and resilience.
What You'll Do
- Provide one-on-one peer support to individuals in recovery or facing mental health and substance use challenges
- Listen actively and model hope based on your lived experience
- Help individuals identify personal goals and take steps toward them
- Connect people to community resources, social activities, and support networks
- Participate in group support activities or facilitation when needed
- Document and report on peer support activities and individual progress
- Collaborate with clinical and case management staff to support holistic care
Requirements
- Personal lived experience with mental health, substance use recovery, or a related challenge
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Genuine commitment to helping others achieve their goals
- Reliability and professional demeanor in all settings
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect individual privacy
- Willingness to be trained in peer support best practices, trauma-informed care, and agency procedures
