Volunteer Coordinator

Gentiva is hiring a Volunteer Coordinator to join our hospice care team in Brewer, Penobscot County. In this full-time position, you'll build and lead our volunteer program, recruiting compassionate individuals to support patients and families during their most meaningful moments. Working closely with our interdisciplinary healthcare team, you'll create a culture where volunteers feel valued, trained, and empowered to make a real difference in the lives of those we serve.

About This Position

The Volunteer Coordinator role is central to our mission of providing compassionate end-of-life care. You'll oversee all aspects of volunteer engagement—from initial recruitment and comprehensive training through ongoing supervision and support. This is a full-time position in Brewer, where you'll serve as an advocate for volunteers while ensuring they're equipped to provide meaningful support to hospice patients and their families. Your organizational skills, warmth, and commitment to community will directly impact the quality and depth of care our patients receive.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Recruit and screen volunteers through targeted community outreach and relationship-building
• Design and deliver volunteer training on hospice care fundamentals, communication, and compassion-centered support
• Match volunteers to patient and family needs, considering both volunteer skills and patient preferences
• Provide hands-on supervision, mentoring, and emotional support to active volunteers
• Maintain volunteer records, schedules, and documentation to ensure program compliance and continuity
• Coordinate volunteer recognition events and foster a culture of belonging and purpose
• Collaborate with nurses, social workers, and clinical staff to align volunteer activities with patient care goals

What We're Looking For

• Demonstrated passion for hospice care and end-of-life support (or strong interest in learning)
• Excellent organizational and project management abilities
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with diverse populations
• Ability to inspire, motivate, and support volunteers at all experience levels
• Comfort with empathetic, direct conversations about grief, loss, and patient needs
• Experience in volunteer management, community engagement, or related human services roles is valued
