About the Role
As a Substance Use Specialist with PATH's Metro Rail Outreach Team, you'll engage with unhoused individuals throughout Los Angeles County. This full-time position operates Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. You'll serve as a key member of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to identifying pathways out of homelessness through evidence-based street engagement.
What You'll Do
- Conduct outreach and engagement at Metro stations and transit facilities, building trust with individuals experiencing homelessness
- Administer VI-SPDAT assessments to evaluate client needs and determine service connections
- Perform substance abuse screenings and coordinate referrals to treatment services
- Provide case management to help clients access benefits, identification, employment support, and housing solutions
- Facilitate connections to mental health, medical, and supportive services
- Coordinate transitions from street living to interim and permanent housing
- Collaborate with substance abuse providers, mental health agencies, and community partners
- Maintain accurate client documentation and program compliance
- Participate in team meetings, trainings, and community engagement
What We're Looking For
- Minimum 2 years direct experience in substance use services
- Valid driver's license with reliable transportation and proof of insurance (driving required)
- Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal
- Analytical abilities to assess needs and track outcomes
- Collaborative approach with multidisciplinary teams and community partners
- Proactive problem-solving and initiative in field-based settings
- Professional ethics and commitment to client dignity and equity
- Bachelor's degree in related field and/or substance use counseling certification preferred
What You Should Know
Full-time, non-exempt position: $24.78–$30.20 per hour plus $2.41 per hour weekend differential (24 pay periods annually). Salary placement based on experience. Conditions of hire: tuberculosis test, background screening, drug test. Must be authorized to work in U.S. Cannot be currently receiving or have received PATH services within two years. All work performed in California.
