Join the Hawaii State Department of Education as a full-time Teacher of the Deaf (State Office Teacher) serving students in the Wake Island and Honolulu area. In this 12-month position, you'll provide specialized instruction and support to deaf and hard of hearing students, helping them develop language skills, academic competency, and communication strategies that enable success.

About the Role

This dedicated position supports students with hearing loss across the AMR/FKK Complex Area through direct instruction, consultation, and individualized support. You'll work collaboratively with classroom teachers, families, and school teams to ensure deaf and hard of hearing students receive equitable access to learning. The role currently involves itinerant service delivery—traveling between schools and classrooms—though responsibilities may expand to classroom-based instruction as student enrollment and needs evolve.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver specialized instruction in deaf education, sign language, speech, and language development
  • Provide consultation to classroom teachers and staff on best practices for deaf and hard of hearing learners
  • Conduct assessments of communication and academic skills to inform instructional planning
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to student needs
  • Collaborate with families and multidisciplinary teams to support student growth and inclusion
  • Maintain accurate documentation and progress monitoring records

What We're Looking For

  • Hawaii teacher certification in Deaf Education or related special education credential
  • Demonstrated experience working with deaf and hard of hearing students (preferred)
