Amgen is hiring a Director of External Research & Development for our Thousand Oaks, Ventura County location. Lead our external innovation strategy as a full-time director, building partnerships with world-class research organizations and advancing our mission to serve patients living with serious illnesses.
About the Role
As Director of External Research & Development, you'll oversee strategic external partnerships and identify cutting-edge research opportunities that complement our internal R&D capabilities. You'll build and strengthen relationships with academic institutions, research organizations, and biotech partners to bring the best science to our pipeline.
What You'll Do
- Lead the identification and evaluation of external research opportunities and emerging technologies
- Develop and manage relationships with academic institutions, contract research organizations, and biotech companies
- Assess and negotiate partnerships, licensing deals, and collaboration opportunities
- Integrate external innovations into our research and development strategy
- Guide cross-functional teams through partnership evaluation and integration
- Contribute to long-term R&D strategy and competitive positioning
What We're Looking For
- Advanced degree in life sciences, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field
- 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology research, development, or business development
- Proven success building and managing external partnerships and collaborations
- Strong understanding of drug discovery and development processes
- Leadership skills with ability to influence across functions and organizational levels
- Scientific judgment and ability to evaluate emerging research and technology trends
- Strategic thinking and excellent communication skills
