Senior Scientist – Experimental Protein Design for Target Discovery

Amgen seeks a Senior Scientist specializing in Experimental Protein Design for Target Discovery to join our team in South San Francisco, San Mateo County. This full-time position offers the opportunity to design and engineer novel proteins that unlock new therapeutic approaches for patients facing serious illnesses.

About the Role

As a Senior Scientist in Experimental Protein Design, you'll lead the conception and validation of protein therapeutics from target selection through proof-of-concept. Your work will bridge computational protein engineering and wet-lab experimentation, driving discovery programs that advance Amgen's pipeline.

What You'll Do

• Design protein variants using structure-guided and computational approaches to achieve desired binding, stability, and functional properties
• Plan and execute iterative cycles of protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization to validate design predictions
• Collaborate with structural biologists, computational chemists, and cell biologists to refine targets and prioritize protein candidates
• Generate comprehensive experimental data supporting mechanism of action and differentiation for lead protein candidates
• Mentor junior scientists and contribute to team scientific strategy and direction
• Present findings to cross-functional teams and external scientific audiences

What We're Looking For

• PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, bioengineering, protein science, or related discipline
• 7+ years of professional experience in protein engineering, synthetic biology, or protein therapeutics development
• Strong expertise in protein design principles, expression systems, and purification techniques
• Demonstrated proficiency with biophysical methods (SPR, ITC, FPLC, mass spectrometry, or crystallography)
• Experience with computational protein design tools and molecular modeling platforms
• Proven ability to manage complex projects independently and drive them toward clear outcomes
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for scientific and cross-functional audiences
• Familiarity with drug discovery or development in a biotech or pharmaceutical setting preferred
