Director, Global Clinical Trial Operations, Project Management Office (REMOTE)

Merck is seeking a full-time Director, Global Clinical Trial Operations, Project Management Office to lead enterprise-wide clinical execution strategy — available as a fully remote position based in Carson City.

About the Role

Within Merck's Clinical Research and Pharmacovigilance organization, this Director-level position carries enterprise accountability for shaping how global clinical trials are planned, governed, and delivered. You will lead the Project Management Office function that underpins Merck's pipeline from first-in-human studies through late-phase development, championing both speed and scientific rigor across a complex portfolio.

What You'll Do

• Direct the end-to-end operational execution of global clinical trials, ensuring programs are delivered on time, on budget, and in compliance with GCP and ICH guidelines
• Build and maintain a high-performing PMO framework — including standardized processes, governance structures, templates, and performance metrics — that scales across Merck's international trial footprint
• Partner with Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Biostatistics, and Data Management to align trial operations with broader program strategy
• Oversee CRO and third-party vendor relationships, including selection, contracting, and ongoing performance management
• Identify portfolio-level risks, develop mitigation plans, and escalate critical issues to senior leadership with recommended solutions
• Lead cross-functional working groups and drive continuous improvement initiatives that reduce cycle times and increase operational quality
• Provide mentorship and direction to clinical operations professionals, cultivating talent and building organizational capability
• Contribute to regulatory submissions by ensuring operational data and study conduct documentation meet agency expectations

What We're Looking For

• Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, or MS) in a life sciences discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 10 or more years of progressive clinical trial operations experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with at least 4 years in a senior leadership capacity
• Demonstrated success running a PMO or equivalent governance function within a global clinical development organization
• Deep fluency in GCP, ICH E6, and applicable regulatory requirements across major markets
• Proven ability to oversee large CRO partnerships and manage complex multi-site, multi-region studies
• Exceptional organizational, communication, and stakeholder-management skills suited to a matrixed, global environment
• Experience with clinical trial management systems (CTMS) and digital tools that support operational excellence
